Many people make the mistake of thinking they can handle their own swimming pool construction and eliminate the cost of hiring a contractor to oversee the job. That’s a bad idea (unless you happen to be a swimming pool contractor). Contractors have been through the process many times and are experts at dealing with each different stage of construction. Good contractors can give you a much better idea about what to expect. But don’t be afraid to ask for references and establish the credibility of any contractor you hire.
You know that unexpected glitch during the future construction of your pool that will completely throw you for a loop? You don’t? Well, a contractor probably does. Swimming pool contractors have overseen the construction of many swimming pools. Most of what could go wrong has gone wrong for them, giving them the experience to deal with it. An experience contractor will make the construction of your pool go faster, and when it’s done, you will be more satisfied with the results.
Another advantage contractors have is they can provide a better vision of your future pool. They will be able to tell you what will work, what won’t , and what will cost you extra. By the way, you should ask prospective contractors if they can provide a 3-D proposal. New technology and computer graphics are now allowing swimming pool contractors to provide three-dimensional mock-ups that let you view the pool from different angles and perspectives. They will let you see how different designs will work on your particular piece of property.
Don’t hire the first contractor you call. At least, don’t hire him or her before talking to several others. Swimming pool construction can be a stressful event and will disrupt your daily life for a period of time. You should hire someone that you can work with during these times of stress. It’s imperative that you establish the credibility and record of your contractor candidates before making a final decision. If a contractor won’t show you references and examples of past work, then show him the door.
