Swimming pools are supposed to be fun and relaxing. But to some pool owners, the drudgery of cleaning and maintenance take a lot of the enjoyment out of ownership. Routine cleaning is the key to keeping your pool “swimmable.” Luckily for lazy pool owners, there are new technologies becoming available that make cleaning and maintenance much easier. Let’s take a look at some of the new ideas that could make your pool more fun to have and less work to keep up.
There’s no getting around the fact that pools must be cleaned. The longer you go between cleanings, the more difficult it is to clean when you do get around to it (and the unhealthier your pool is in the meantime). Clearly, the best way to go is developing a habit of routine maintenance. That way, the dirt and bacteria growth don’t get out of hand. You should also make sure that you change all the filters frequently. The small amount of added cost will pay dividends in the condition of your pool. The other routine you need to establish from the beginning is checking the pH of your water regularly.
For those who hate the idea of regular maintenance, there is new technology on the horizon that may be just for you. There is a growing movement toward the installation of self-cleaning tiles. This means less work for you because the tiles prevent the growth of bacteria and the buildup of dirt. They work because they come with a special coating. This coating oxidizes in the sunlight, which immediately destroys bacteria (and even some viruses).
There are other new proprietary systems available that may be an alternative to traditional chlorine treatments. PoolSan is a good example of this: it appears to do an excellent job of keeping your pool clean, hygienic and crystal clear (which makes your pool look much more inviting). Best of all it doesn’t have many of the negative aspects of chlorine, as it is hypo-allergenic, odor-free and toxin-free.
Face it, there’s no way to get around the need to clean your pool. You just can’t put that much water into a hole and expect it to stay pristine. But it looks like science and technology may be coming to our rescue yet again, providing products that keep pools clean and daily maintenance to a minimum.
